FARM FORUM L Questions—and answers by experts—for the man on the land. f j ; >' ’I *• Who’s been eating *My* porridge?** Feeding Oats to Horses ®: Is there a danger of overfeeding horses particularly at the yearling stage ar tarlier? The feeding of oats and concentrates was particularly in mind. 4* This is similar to an earlier question answered in Farm Forum. Yearlings ire like all young stock and they must be done particularly well at the meaner stage and gradually brought on. Overfeeding would be detrimental out the opinion is advanced that the regular feeding of oats and limited concentrates would be an advantage. Rushes in Swampy Ground Q > ft there an effective way of controlling rushes in swampy ground T * 1 Shell Weedkiller “D” (2,4-D Amine) is the recommended weedkiller to control rushes. Rushes should be closely mowed early in the spring and allowed to grow 12' high before spraying. The area should then be sprayed with 4 pints of Shell Weedkiller “D” in 35 gallons of water per acre. As an alternative Shell Weedkiller "E” (2,4-D Ester L.V.) may be used at 4 to 6 pints in 25 gallons of water per acre. Fairly good control can be obtained with one spraying, but additional spot treatments will probably be necessary. Unless drainage is carried out the rushes will come back into the pasture. Thence in all cases where drainage is practical this should be done. Controlling Cocksfoot Q: Is there a means of controlling Cocksfoot and other undesirable grasses in a lucerne crop without damaging lucerne? A « Shell are marketing a chemical known as Dowpon which is a very effective grass killer. From 4 to 5 lbs. of Dowpon in 20 to 30 gallons of water per acre will control rye grass and Cocksfoot in lucerne. Where Browntop is present 3 to 4 lbs of Dowpon are necessary but where Poa Annua, Barley Grass and Goose Grass are present only 2 to 3 lbs. of Dowpon per acre are necessary. Apply in the late winter, early spring to reduce the damage to lucerne. At 4 to 5 lbs per acre Dowpon will check lucerne, but this will soon regrow. Bwyrwg Dairy Stock Q ! Are there any rules that could be followed in buying dairy cows? A! It is important to know the age of the heifer or cow which is to be bought. Heifers are usually cheaper than three-year olds and four-year olds but are untried for production, for ability and temperament. Second and third year calvers are the most valuable stock as they will have established themselves and are coming to peak production. Good tested cows are usually hard to come by. It is probably best to aim at buying about half mature stock and about half young stock so that when the herd reaches full production the annual replacement rate will be fairly even. “Farm Forum” is another Shell aerviee to farmers. If you /have any queries, address them to "Farm Forum”. Box xxia® l * 2091, Wellington, and watch for the answer in this column.
