ARREST MADE AT RACES
Allegedly Forged
Tickets
Two men who were arrested on the Ashburton racecourse on Saturday will appear in the Christchurch Magistrate’s Court this morning on a charge of forging a totalisator ticket. The men were arrested by Detective-Sergeant F. G. Pine and Detective T. Stuart, of the Christchurch Criminal Investigation Branch.
It is believed about £3OO has been paid out on forged totalisator tickets at recent race meetings in Christchurch, including the three-day ' Grand National meeting of the Canterbury Jockey Club at Riccarton and the twoday National meeting, of the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club at Addington. The forgeries, mainly -on £-5 tickets, are described as “extremely clever” and detection is possible only after a close examination.
The police are unwilling to disclose the method used to forge the tickets because it is understood this is the first time this technique has been used in New Zealand. There have been no reports of similar forgeries from other centres.
