State House Rentals

Sir,—l think “Radar” is under a misapprehension. The National Party’s policy was to raise State house rentals as allowed by the Fair Rents Act. To quote my own case. The Labour Government has raised my rent to £2. but if the National Party had become the Government it would have been about £3. The Labour Government had to raise rents to meet the costs of maintainence allowed to increase under the National Party, one of the greatest rises being a jump from 1 per cent, to 4 per cent, interest on the money borrowed to build the houses. During the election Mr Nash stated definitely that, though opposed to the increases proposed by the National Party, the Labour Party would have to increase rents to meet the costs I mentioned. The cost of living under this head would have been much greater under a National Government. —Yours, etc., A.F.P. August 28, 1958.
