PASTORAL CARE

Vicar Returns From Australia

After attending a school of pastoral care organised by the Diocese of Melbourne, the first of its kind in Australia, the Rev. L. N. Morris, the vicar of Bryndwr, returned to Christchurch on Saturday. Among the subjects discussed at the school were the problems associated with the mentally, physically, and socially ill, alcoholism, work in new, industrial, and rural areas and marriage guidance. It was attended by clergy reppresenting dioceses of Victoria, New South Wales, Tasmania, Wellington, and Christchurch. During the evening sessions the school was concerned with wider aspects of the work of the church such as inter-professional relationships, the minister’s work of pastoral care and the relationships between churches. Mr Morris also spent a week visiting hospitals in Melbourne and he believes that the diocese is developing a ministry to the sick which is without parallel in the Anglican communion. Full-time w chaplains were equipped for their work by study in anatomy, nursing and allied subjects. They were given every assistance by the Health Department and were admitted to pathology demonstrations, surgical operations and clinical meetings. Because of the effectiveness of their work the Government had provided generous funds for its expansion, said Mr Morris.
