RACING TAMARISK-BAGMAN AT SHORT ODDS

Three times this .year the Riccarton stablemates Tamarisk and Motueka, by their combined efforts, have landed major handicap races on Canterbury and Otago provincial courses. » On Saturday Tamarisk was successful and Motueka was only a length back third in the Ashburton Cup. Early this year Motueka was . first and Tamarisk third in the Waikouaiti Cup, and a day later thay ran first and second in the same order in the President’s Handicap at Oamaru.

Place supporters of the bracket Would have lost money on their investments on Saturday had Motueka not got up for third behind Tamarisk and Master David. The bracket was solidly supported and the win-and-place dividends were 3s 3d and £1 16s. Tamarisk is a five-year-old gelding by Oman from Fyxen raced in partnership by Mr J. MacG. Inglis and the Riccarton trainer, J. S. Shaw. He was ridden by G. W. Mein. As a race the Ashburton Cup was most disappointing. A general lack of confidence in the ability of the horses to master the distance in a solidly-run race was evident- in the tactics adopted. King Robin was allowed to go along at a very leisurely pace in the lead. When the sprint home started the horses closest to the lead were Master David and Tamarisk, and" they fought out the finish. Tamarisk got to the front close to home and beat Master David by half a length. Motueka was another half length back third, and then there was a neck to El Jefe. The Tamarisk-Motueka bracket carried £9479 10s in a double pool of £30,327 ss. Bagman, which was also favourite, won the second leg, the Flying Handicap, and holders of 11,652 5s tickets on the successful combination received £8 12s for £l. This was Bagman’s fifth win and his first in open company for his owner-breeder, Mr H. D. Greenwood. His success was well earned and brilliantly achieved. He was one of the slowest beginners but challenged strongly and passed Appreciate and Brianbra close to home. Bagman is a half-brother by Lucky Bag. to the good winners Undergrowth and Writer. His four-year-old form could be very good. Three-Year-Olds The other race of major interest was the Rakaia Three-Year-Old Handicap. In winning with top weight of 9-5, Braganza became a strong favourite for the John Grigg Stakes, run at Ashburton on September 13. Braganza won by half a head from the Otago filly. Minglow. How much he would have won by if A. J. Stokes him rein inside the last furlong can only be guessed at. But'Brag** anza’s superiority was quite definite, and it is pretty certain he will be a galloper of some class a» a thfree-yead-old, at least as a sprinter. Braganza is owned by Mr A. N. Smith, president of the Dimedin Jockey Club, and is trained at Riccarton by J. C. Tomkinson. This has been a highly-success-ful combination, Tomkinson having purchased several good winners as yearlings to carry the Smith colours. Some of them were Coral Arc, Ballochmyle, Hush Money, and Tamrin. Raring was done on a fast - track. The weather was fine except for a shower and a flurrv of snow before and after the Rakaia Handicap. The on-course totalisator turnover was £34,796 10s, including £3828 10s on the double, compared with £33,049 10s last year. Ashburton Cup Tamarisk followed Master David and the weakening King Robin into the last furlong of the Ashburton Cup, and produced the strongest finish to beat Master David by half a length. Tamarisk's bracketed mate, Motueka, got up for third another halflength back, just beating the lightweight, El Jefe. After a slowly run first furlong Tamarisk was in front. King Robin took charge after they left the straight, but there was no quickening in-the pace, and nearly every horse in the race was pulling until they were well along the back straight. ' . . King Rohm went out by two lengths near the seven furlongs, where Tamarisk-was second clear of Royal Halyard. Motueka. and Purser (in line) El Jefe and Master David were in a packed field. W. D. Skelton took Master Dayid forward to second a length behind King Robin going to the five furlongs. Tamarisk was then third in a gap ahead of Royal Halyard. Motueka, and El Jefe. Purser had gone back two or tnree places. Master David followed King Robin into the straight, and had the measure of the Riccarton light-weight going to the furlongs Master David tried hard to hold his lead, but Tamarisk outfinished him, getting up close to the post, and drawing out quickly in the last few strides. Motueka shaded El Jefe for third. King Robin was a weakening fifth a length back, and next were Purser. Royal Halyard, Aquarius, Coin’s Edge. Nehru, Adversary, and Smuggles Confidently Ridden Braganza moved almost effortlessly from a trailing position "to challenge Minglow near the furlong in the Rakaia Three-Year-Old Handicap. He looked a? ii he could have drawn right aw av. but went to the post under a hold and gained only a halfhead decision. Minglow beat Airephelia by a length for second. Orderly was the -lowest away, and Braganza and Romancing were two of the quickest. After a furlong Romancing was a clear leader, and Minglow. Airephelia, and Braganza were following. Brummel had to be eased to keep off Braganza’s heels when moving forward after passing the half-mile, where -he was alongside Waterfall and Piknace. Jimmy Hall was next a length back^^nffthen there was a gap Romancing war beaten VKfitside the furlong, and Minglow dif| not have the lead for long. f Braganzp bad ner meafcure at every stride, and the margin flattered the Otago Airephelia home turn to neat leading them length:- back. Waterfall sh Brummel. Pinnace an<j and OrdeiiV Bagman-

Bagman won going away by a , length from Appreciate, which beat Bnanbra .by half a head. I Appreciate and Bnanbra were on . terms in the lead after two furlongs. Beau Revere and Blonde Sprite were ■ following, the latter having gone forward quickly after dwelling slightly at the start Cerise, Water > Boy.- ,Coq ‘ d’Or, and Bagman were next. Appreciate ran clear on the home turn, but Brianbra and Bagman closed on him going to the furlong. 1 Bagman had easily the best finish, , and it gave him a decisive win. Appreciate just lasted for second from Bnanbra Then there was a length to Willie Wolseley, whose powerful ! run from the tail of the field was a 1 minor feature of the race. Blonde Sprite was fifth another i length back, and was followed in by Water Boy, Money-Go-Round Coq ' dOr, Beau Revere, Skyrider, ana Cerise. Major N. A. Rattray, and trained at Riccarton by G. R. Felling. He was trailing on the inner, after a furlong, and was two places back coming to the straight, where Carrageen was clear of Befana, Sea Fox. and Beau Bian. Befana mastered Carrageen going to the furlong. Ghana was then in trouble behind the weakening Carrageen, but when brought wider out on the track, he challenged strongly and won going away. Carrageen was two lengths back, third beating the fast-finishing Prince Delaware by a neck. Prince Delaware was a good way back in the field coming to the straight. Sea Fox was fifth, a length back, weakening after being third on the home turn. Foxplay was the best of the others but was in a gap. Ruve Wins Easily Ruve was much too good for the others in the Eiffelton Hack Handicap, for which-she second favourite. She 'was three places back on the inner coming to the straight, and responded brilliantly when brought wider out, winning going away by a length and a half from NatClla, which barely saved second place from .Heaths This was Ruve’s second win for her Wellington owner, Mr J. H. G O'Brien, for whom she is trained at Riccarton by F. A. Roberts. After a furlong. Miss Halyard and Natella, led from Heath and N.ugget; was next on the inner,, followed by Massalia .and’Starwjrn. • The. order’hardly changed in -the leading division coming to the straight. Natella dropped Miss Halyard going to the furlong, bat was immediately challenged by Ruve. „ Ruve drew away at her ease for one of the most decisive wins on the programme. Natellp lasted , for second by a nose from Heath. Then there was half a length to Nugget, a neck to Starwyn. and a length and a half to Tripped. • The favourite, Kakanui, was last away. He ran up quickly, but faded again, to finish last. Mexico’s Fast Gallop Mexico made nearly all the run'hing in the Fairfield Hack Handicap and Won unchallenged by three lengths from Tombola, which shaded the consistent Search Warrant. Mexico’s very fast gallop—he ran tM six furlongs in Imin 12sec—had am the others in difficulties some waVbut. This- was his first, win for Mrtl. W. Saunders, for whom he is trailed at Riccarton by .
