15 Fire Calls Answered By Brigade At Week-end
During the week-end, 15 fire calls—eight on Saturday, three yesterday and four false alarms — were answered by units of the Christchurch Fire Brigade.
Three of the calls were to extensive grass and scrub fires, including one in Redcliffs which was attended by five units. However, none caused any property damage and the other fires caused slight or no damage. The biggest grass fire—in Panorama road, Redcliffs, about 5 p.m. on Saturday—at its height covered several acres, but it was soon brought under control by the brigade. Two units from the central station and units from Sumner,
New Brighton and Woolston attended.
The other grass and scrub fires were at 50 Mahars road, a property owned by Mr T. A. Wayne, at 2 47 p.m. on Saturday and in a vacant section in Wairoa street, New Brighton, at 1.57 p.m. on Saturday. The first was attended by units from the central station and St. Albans and the second by units from the central station and New Brighton. At 9.32 a.m. on Saturday,, a unit from Sockbtfrn was called to a chimney fire at 44 Hei Hei road, a house occupied by Mr K. Chandler. No damage resulted. Units from the central station and Sydenham attended a fire in the kitchen of a house at 22 Stpurbridge street, occupied by Mr J. G. Gordon. The call was received at 12.09 p.m. and the fire caused slight damage to the wall of the kitchen.
At 4.07 p.m., a hedge fire,at 212 Port Hills road, a property Downed by Beatrice Carter, was attended by units from the central station and Sydenham. Damage was slight.
A rubbish fire left burning on a section at 348 Tuam street was put out by a unit from the central station at 7.35 p.m. At, 10.28 p.m., a hedge fire in Edward street, Prebbleton, was attended by units from the central station and Sockburn. No damage to property resulted. >
Yesterday, at 1.26 p.m., a hedge fire in the grounds of Beckenham School, Sandwich road, was put out by one unit from Sydenham. No damage resulted. A unit from the central station answered a call to a fire in a house at 40 Ely street, occupied by Mr L. G. Clark, at 10.51 a.m. The fire was confined to curtains in the kitchen and slight damage only was done to the wall. An oven fire in a house at 6 Bellbrook crescent, occupied by Mr J. W. Avery, was put out by one unit from St. Albans which received' the call at 12.01 p.m. There was no damage.
