VISIT TO ENGLAND

Programme

. Oi Nautilus

(Rec. 9.30 p.m.) NEW YORK, August 10.

The Nautilus was on course today for England where new acclaim awaited its crew, the American Associated Press reported. She was due at Portland, England, on Tuesday—2l days and 9000 miles out of Hawaii oh the other side of the world.

Except for her skipper, this will be the first time the 116-man crew has set foot on land since leaving Hawaii on. July 23. The skipper, Commander William Anderson, arrived in Washington on Friday morning, flown in from a point off Iceland. From President Eisenhower he received thanks, a decoration for himself and a citation for his crew. He will fly to England to board his submarine before it reaches Portland.

The White House, announcing her destination today, said the vessel will visit England, from August 12-17.

In the wake of the trans-Polai trip between the Pacific and Atlantic oceans there was high praise from the capitals of the free world for the feat, the agency said. The White House said a flood of congratulatory , messages from Americans also was rolling in. But there also was a complaint about the ceremony at which the Wjiite House made the- dramatic announcement on Friday. Some Democratic legislators deplored that Rear-Admiral H. G Rickover—the fiery little man who fought for a start on the nuclear submarine programme—was not invited. The White House Press Secretary, Mr James Hagerty, said it was ridiculous to try to make anything of the Admiral’s absence from the list.

Mr Hagerty said there was noi space in the crowded room where the ceremony was held, which was jammed by reporters and some high Navy and Atomic Energy Commission leaders. It had been decided that only top ranking heads of operational departments should be invited.
