Mr Shanahan New U.N. Representative

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, August 10. The recently-appointed High Commissioner for New Zealand in Canada (Mr Foss Shanahan) will also be permanent representative to the New Zealand permanent mission to the United Nations in New York. The Prime Minister (Mr Nash), who announced this tonight, said that Mr Shanahan, one of New Zealand’s leading career diplomats, would take with him to his important new appointments in North America the best wishes of everyone in New Zealand. Mr Shanahan was formerly Commissioner for New Zealand in South-east Asia.

In his United Nations appointment. Mr Shanahan will be replacing Sir Leslie Munro, who will be retiring as New Zealand's permanent . representative on September 16. *Mr Shanahan is leaving for his important assignments at a time of critical developments in the international field/’ said Mr Nash. “Particularly in his role as New Zealand’s representative at United Nations, he faces many

arduous and exacting tasks. He goes with the best wishes and full confidence of the New Zealand Government and people. “As he has already shown during his term as New Zealand’s first Commissioner in South-east Asia, I have no doubt he will prove a worthy representative of this country wherever he goes.”
