QUESTIONING OF RIDERS

Steward’s Action At Tauranga

G. O. Mudgway, the rider of Peter Willonyx, and W. H. Short, the rider of Peterford, were spoken to by the stipendiary steward, Mr J. A. Poulsen, before the running of the President’s Handicap at Tauranga on Saturday.

They were told that there had been a lot of dissatisfaction regarding the running of good handicap horses in country events. The stewards did not want to know the instructions given the riders, but they expected each to do his best.

After the rate both Mudgway and Short were questioned be- , fore the judicial committee about the running of their mounts. The patrol stewards were also ( questioned. Short said that Peterford pulled hard for seven furlongs, but then dropped the bit and did hot respond to the whip. , Mudgway said that Peter Willonyx • received a good' run through from the three furldngs, but under the whip and then ridden with hands and heels, he could not bridge the gap.

NUTTALL MISSES TWO WINNERS

(New Zealand Press association) MELBOURNE; August 10. The New Zealand jockey, Kqith Nuttall, who was disqualified on Friday for two years, missed riding a certain winner at Caulfield yesterday.

He was to have ridden Lord, the 9 to 4 favourite, which effortlessly won the St. Aubin Handicap, of six furlongs. After Nuttall was disqualified, the trainer. Ken Hilton, engaged the apprentice, B. Pulbrook Lord won easily, one and a half lengths ahead of Great Bronze (4 to 1). with Sir Pyream (15 to 1) two lengths back third.

Nuttall also missed a ride on Standard Gold, which won the previous race, the Cambria Plate, at 25 to 1. Standard Gold won by 10 lengths from Mac (14 to 1) and Sandule (15 to 1) after the favourite. Good Summer, fell near the five furlongs, when he was already m. an impossible position and running badly. G. Lane, who rode Good Summer, received a bruised right elbow, bruised right knee and concussion.
