Golf FOXTON WINS AT WINDSOR

Testing Course Takes Toll Competitors in the Windsor Club’s open tournament yesterday had very little opportunity to admire the beauties of the course. With the winner, K. D. Foxton, six over scratch going out in the afternoon round, and scoring two sevens coming back, it will be appreciated that the lay-out of the course demands the utmost concentration and skill. Windsor is not among the bestknown Christchurch courses, but it may become far more popular in future. It has some of the best golfing country in the city, it is picturesque, and as a test of accuracy it is almost unsurpassed. There are plenty of trees and some pleasing undulations; but the fairways are narrow and the greens often quite minute. It is no place for the inaccurate long hitter. Some of the dog legs are most abrupt, and the gullies and thickets and the turgid waters of Bottle Lake, offer constant threats. Laboured Progress Foxton had a very fine scratch 71 in the morning, when he came home in 35, two under. He then led by four strokes from R. J. Ramsay and R. K. Atkinson. These three played together, and their laboured progress throughout the afternoon was relieved by patches of genuine brilliance. On the way out, both Foxton and Atkinson dropped six strokes, and they expended an aggregate of 22 strokes at the 487-yard eighth—Atkinson a 9 after being out of bounds, Ramsay a 7, Foxton a 6. But Ramsay, out in 38, was only two strokes behind Foxton. At the 326-yard eleventh, where a per-fectly-placed drive is., demanded. Foxton went too far, got among some trees, decided to take a risk, and had a 7 for his pains. Ramsay played the hole perfectly for a birdie 3, and then led by two strokes. Variety But at the very next hole he did nearly everything wrong, and took 9. Two holes later, he had a fine birdie at the 487-yard fourteenth, where the last of the fairway rises quite sharply to the green, but Foxton holed a long putt for a magnificent eagle. This was after his putts for 13 holes had reached 29. Ramsay was still in the hunt until the sixteenth, where he cut bis drive into the tangle of trees beside the lake. He plunged in. and tried to play out, but it took him another stroke before he came out, covered in wet leaves and mud, and he finally had another 9. He finished the round with a beautifully-played eagle 3 at-the last, 405 yards. Five over for the half, with two nines, suggests the heavy toll Windsor takes/ of the inaccurate shot.
