Cycling CLUB 50-MILE TITLES
N. Cowles Wins Papanui Race The amateur clubs affiliated to the Canterbury amateur cycling centre held their 50-mile senior and junior championships on Saturday. Although the weather was warm there was a very strong wind. Both the Avon and the Christchurch clubs ran their senior and junior championships as one nace, but the Papanui club held two separate races with the juniors starting 10 minutes behind the seniors. PAPANUI CLUB N. Cowles rode a grand race to retain his title when he won the senior event again with comparative ease from A. Mahon. It was expected that Mahon would be a very hard opponent for Cowles, but such was not the case. The course was from Papanui up the North road across to Sefton, then back to Rangiora and then on to Papanui for the finish. The senior riders held well together for the greater part of the journey. At his third attempt Cowles opened and held a gap. He went away to finish nearly three minutes ahead of Mahon, who was ‘ second. Seventeen riders took part in the junior event; Near the line K. Jones led out and appeared to havt the race in hand. He eased up a little, but when r he found K. Dwyer moving upon him very fast he came again and held off the challenge to win by a tyre. Green was nearly a minute back, third. Results were:— Senior Championship.—N. Cowles. 2hr 20mih 46sec, 1; A. Mahon, 2hr 23min 43sec. 2; M. Combe, 2hr 24min 54sec, 3. ; Sealed Handicap.—N. Cowles. Junior Championship.—K. Jones, 2hr 21min 17sec. 1; K. Dwyer, 2hr 21min 17.2 sec, 2; R. Green, 2hr 21min 21sec, 3. Sealed Handicap.—K. Dwyer. AVON CLUB The brilliant junior rider, T. Kenny, led the field home in the Avonhead championship events, which were run as one race from Yaldhurst to Racecourse Hill and return. Although Kenny outsprinted the Canterbury 25-mile senior champion, R. Fowler, he could only take the junior title. The senior was won by Fowler. On the outward run, Kenny, Fowler and G. Weddell left the rest of the field, just before Darfield, and held on out to the turn and throughout the return journey. Nearing the line Kenny led out for a long sprint hotly pursued by Fowler and Weddell. Neither could make much impression on him. In a blanket finish, with only half a wheel separating the three riders, Kenny won from Fowler with Weddell third. Results.— Senior Championship.—R. Fow’ler, 2hr smin 9.2 sec, 1; G. Weddell, 2hr smin 9.4 sec. 2; G. Osborne, 2hr 12min junior Championship.—T. Kenny, 2hr smin 9sec, 1; L. Bishop, 2hr 12min 47sec, 2; D. Lyes, 2hr 12min 47.45ec, 3. Sealed Handicap.—L. Bishop. CHRISTCHURCH CLUB Straying sheep caused havoc in the Christchurch club championships. The sheep ran into a bunch of riders and brought down C. Hensley, M. Newman and *E. Wakefield. Good sportsmanship was shown by the other riders who pulled up and waited until minor repairs were made to the damaged machines. Considering the delay the time fo:
the 50 miles of 2hr 9min Isec was good. Hensley did well to come third in the junior championship. K. Jeffrey, who won the junior title, rode excellently to finish only one second behind the Winner of the senior title, G. Hill. G. Hill, K. Jeffrey and G. Shepherd held together until near the finish when Shepherd lagged a little, but held on for third place and second in the senior championship. 23sec behind Hill. Results:— Senior Championship.—G. Hill, 2hr 9min Isec, 1; G. Shepherd, 2hr 9min 24sec, 2; B. Brettell, 2hr 20min 25sec. 3. Junior Championship.—K. Jeffrey, 2hr 9min 2sec, 1; B. Berry, 2hr 27min 55sec, 2; C. Leggett, by 2sec. R. Mann filled third place from the scratch mark and also took fastest time. Results:— P. Green (4Jmin), 22min 58sed, 1; K Leggett (4Jmin), 23min, 2; R. Mann (scr). 19min 12sec, 3.
