SOCCER CHATHAM CUP FINAL

Seatoun Overwhelms Christchurch City (New teaiana Press Association) WELLINGTON, August 10. Supporters carried Seatoun players from the Basin Reserve, Wellington, after their decisive Chatham Cup win over Christchurch City yesterday. Seatoun had just won the New Zealand final for the second year in succession—and with a record score of seven goals to one. A new record was created by the Seatoun centre-forward, J. J. Donovan —he scored six good opportunist goals. Christchurch City had neither the combination nor the individuals to match Seatoun’s smart teamwork and fitness.

Seatoun’s score bettered the performances of Marist, Wellington, which beat All Blacks, Buller, 5-0 in 1932; Waterside, Wellington, which beat Mosgiel, 6-2 in 1940; and Western, Canterbury. which won 6-2 over Eastern Suburbs, Auckland, in 1955. Five thousand persons saw the match. Nine of Seatoun’s players received their second Chatham Cup medal. Three who received their first medals are R. T. Wright, J. J. Donovan, and G. R. McClelland. The two players injured while representing Wellington against the Australian tourists last week, B. H. W. Fletcher, and the captain, K. C. Gibson, took the field for the Chatham Cup final. Gibson’s ankle proved too much of a strain—on the team and himself—and he left the field after 35 minutes. •Several minutes later the centre-half, Fletcher, received a ball in his black eye and stitched forehead, but he recovered. Gibson, the captain of Seatoun for many seasons, stood in the background when the Chatham Cup was presented. The vicecaptain, R. B. O’Brien, received the trophy from Lord Cobham. Donovan’s goal scoring was the result of super wing play, specially by the reserve, N. Kerr, and energetic w‘ork by the inside-left, R. C. Kearns. Kearns, fought tirelessly for possession, his control was excellent and he distributed freely. Kerr was the replacement for the injured Gibson He took the outside right place, while O’Brien went back to left half. Five of Donovan’s goals were scored with his head. Three were

the result of accurate corner kicks—two by Kerr and one by W. M. Logan—and two others were scored after Logan had made good breaks and lofted the ball. Donovan’s other goal came from an individual break. Wright made Seatoun’s other point. City’s Goal Giblett, who replaced Christchurch City’s centre-forward, P. Devine, after he was injured in a collision with the Seatoun goalkeeper, R. G. Hiddleston, scored Christchurch’s only goal from a melee of bunched Seatoun defenders. Apart from Donovan and Kearns, it was difficult to pick individual Seatoun players. As usual, Fletcher was steady—in spite of his eye—the right half, J. Metcalf, did a lot of work, O’Brien toiled in a strange position and the full-backs, McClelland and W. W. H. King, gave the polished Hiddleston all the support he needed. Christchurch City’s right fullback, A. W. Juner, repeatedly broke Seatoun attacks and his tussle with Logan was stirring. The wing-halves, T. Clackson and R. Herbert, had a bad day against the nippy Seatoun inside men. At centre-half, M. Wild was beaten by Donovan—specially in the air —in spite of his superior height.
