PHELPS HURT

(New Zealand Press Association) , NAPIER, August 10. The utility back. R. Phelps, will probably be unavailable for the second match of the Australian Rugby team’s tour against Wanganui at Wanganui on Wednesday Phelps, one of the most ■ experienced backs in the side and one of the best backs in the match at Napier injured his back on Saturday. The extent of the injury is not yet known but it is thought not to be too serious.

Others on the injured list are J Lenehan and R. Kay, the lock, J White, and the flanker, M. van Gelder.

Southland Beats Otago 10-8

(New Zealand Press Association) INVERCARGILL, August 10. Southland scored a well deserved 10-8 win over Otago in a representative Rugby match in Invercargill on Saturday The weather was fine and the ‘ground was in good order. The game was watched by a crowd of 13,300.

The Southland forwards worked particularly well, and won a lot of the ball for their backs. The Otago backline saw little ball, but showed that it was dangerous if given the opoort unity. R. Todd and J. Allison scored tries for Southland, and D. L. Ashby converted both. V. Lloyd scored for Otago, and E. S. Diack kicked a penalty goal 1 and a converson.

Waikato Too Good For Thames Valley

(New Zealand Press Association) HAMILTON, August 10. Waikato was far too strong for Thames Valley at Hamilton on Saturday. and after leading by 14 points to 3 at half-time won by 20 points to 8

There was a disappointing crowd of 4000 on a good day. Waikato won the game in the forwards. Whineray. Pickering, Hemi and Hayes playing good football. The backs were pnly good in soasms. I. J. Clarke, Minoster, and R. Morris (two) scored for Waikato. Clarke converting one and kicking a penalty. Bryce Cowley kicked a field goal. For Thames Valley, S. McLean and R. Kerby scored. Jacomb converting one.

Northland Beats Services

(New Zealand Press Association) WHANGAREI. August 10. Northland beat Combined Services 24-11 at Whangarei yesterday. For Northland, tries were scored by C Cunningham (two). K. Murphy. E. J Thompson, P F. Jones, N. Week and E. Dean. Dean converted five and kicked a penalty. For Combined Services, R Berghan scored a try and J. Souter kicked two penalties and a conversion.

EAST COAST BEATS BUSH

(New Zealand Press Association) GISBORNE, August 10. East Coast maintained the form it showed on its recent tour by scoring 16 points in the. last 20 minutes to beat the touring Bush team 24 to 6 at Tokomaru Bay yesterday. The forwards were evenly matched, but East Coast had too much pace in the backs. The East Coast full-1 back. K. Karaka, scored a try and kicked a field goal and two conversions. East Coast’s other points came from a try and a conversion by J. Moeke, two tries by B. Watson and a try by B. Kururangi. For Bush. McHardy and R. Jensen scored unconverted tries.
