PERFORMANCE AT CARDIFF
N.Z. Manager Comments (New Zealand Press Association) ' WELLINGTON, August 10. Empire Games competitors had to be in world class to stand a chance of success at the games, according to Mr J. Meltzer, manager of the New Zealand team which arrived in Auckland from Cardiff on Saturday night. Mr Meltzer said in Wellington tonight that if there was an impression that the New Zealand team had not performed up to expectations he could not agree. Considering the unexpectedly high standard of competition at Cardiff, the New Zealanders’ record compared favourably with previous teams. Some members had failed to find top form, but that had to be expected. Mr Meltzer was reluctant to blame any New Zealand failures on the illness from which many competitors suffered when they arrived at Cardiff, but he did say that more than 40 members of the party were affected No manager, he said, could have asked for better co-opera-tion from his team. The New Zealanders were a happy band, and one of the most popular teams at Cardiff.
