Prince Of Wales On First Welsh Visit

(Rec. 8 p.m.) LONDON, August 9. For the first time since he became Prince of Wales, nine-year-old Prince Charles stepped on to Welsh soil today, reported the “Evening News.” The visit was completely unscheduled and had been kept a closely guarded secret even from local civic heads. A handful of people were there to greet him when he stepped ashore at Mackenzie pier. Holyhead, on the Isle of Anglesey, with Princess Anne. No civic heads were present when the cutter from the Royal yacht Britannia brought the Prince of Wales ashore. A few policemen and people living nearby were the only ones ther& as the Prince and Princess, in a thin drizzle, walked up the

deserted jetty accompanied by the Earl and Countess Mountbatten. The Prince was wearing a light grey suit and a blue tie. He smiled and waved to what might have been the smallest-ever reception committee to meet a Prince of Wales. At the entrance to the jetty they boarded a car and were driven off for what an officer from the Britannia described as a private tour of Anglesey. The quiet welcome contrasted with the thousands who greeted the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh when they landed at the same place earlier. There were flags, flowers and cheering crowds on this, the first visit of a reigning sovereign this century. Later there was another treat f«r the crowds -when the Prino* of Wales and Princess Anne ac-

companied the Queen and the Duke on the drive back to Holyhead to re-embark in the Britannia. The Welsh people went wild with enthusiasm when they saw their recently-created Prince sitting in front of his mother in the car. As the Royal party were walking from the car to the pier to board their barge, the crowd burst through the barriers and police were unable to stem the rush. The party sailed out to the Royal yacht in the barge.
