Contribution Of New Citizens

Sir, —It is natural enough that the Mayor of Christchurch, and no doubt others officiating in a similar capacity at naturalisation ceremonies, should stress the advantages .immigrants derive from settling in New Zealand, and adjure them to adapt themselves to their new environment with a good will and all convenient dispatch. But there is another side to the medal that appears to be rather overlooked. Many of these new arrivals, coming from countries steeped in history and centuries of culture, bring with them national characteristics that are of inestimable benefit to a young country such as this; and a more general acknowledgement of this fact might not come amiss at these naturalisation functions. —Yours, etc., EUROPEAN. August 6, 1958.
