SCHOOL HISTORY

A History of Waitakl* Boys’ High School, 1883-1958. By K. C. McDonald. Whitcombe and Tombs. 476 pp. The senior history. master at Waitaki Boys’ High School has revised and brought up to date the history he wrote for the jubilee of that school in 1933. Mr McDonald writes well and, although he appears to devote a disproportionate amoynt of his space to school football and cricket matches, he \tells an interesting story of plans brought to ** fruition in the face of strenuous opposition and of in every way of a secondary school, which has drawn boarder pupils from all over the country. He is probably at his best in the penportrait he gives of Mr Frank Milner, “The Man,” as he was known to the thousands of boys who passed through Waitaki during his rectorship. While this book will be of special interest to Old Boys, it will have its interest for those concerned with ideals and methods of education at J? e secondary school levet The author pays tribute to such colleagues as M. K. McvuUoch, a gre?t first assistant and about wh>m many tales are x °ld wherever ex-Waitakians gather, and T. H. Hendra *and •• M. Paape, who lost their lives the last world war. He also nsts most of the outstanding achievements of the Old Boys, the Bien by whose record a school js most frequently judged. His o?ok is a full and well-packed well illustrated and competently indexed. It snould prove be a most acceptable present *or an Old Boy or anyone interWaitaki Boys’ High
