EXTINCTION OF RABBITS
Warning Against Complacency
(New Zealand Press Association) DUNEDIN, August 6.
“We can win the battle for the extinction of rabbits in the next 10 years,’’ said the chairman of the South Island Rabbit Boards’ Association (Mr W. A. Scaife), to delegates at the annual conference in Dunedin today. But he warned them against complacency and satisfaction with the results achieved so far. The conference, which will continue tomorrow, is attended by representatives of rabbit boards throughout the South Island. The rabbit population in New Zealand was at its lowest since 1870, said Mr Scaife. At its present level, it was no longer doing any harm to the country. In 1948 rabbit products had been responsible for exports totalling more that £1 million, he said. But, that sum was earned only at great expense to the country.
The problem arose, in New Zealand, from the few rabbits that were liberated for sporting purposes. More than that number still remain, he said. Extermination could be achieved by a complete coverage of the country by rabbit boards. Increased co-operation in scientific research, and “an inspired and all-out effort’’ by not only rabbit boards and employees, but by ratepayers and their employees, was needed, said Mr Scaife.
