Across South Island By Canoe
"The Press” Special Service OAMARU, August 6. Across the South Island by canoe, including a run down the length of the Waitaki river, is a venture planned by the New Zealand Canoeing Association for next Christmas. Advice of this has been received by Mr E. D. Watts, of Oamaru, from his son, Evan, who is an Auckland official of the association and will be a member of the party. The journey will begin at Milford Sound, where three will be spent on the water, and a bus will take members to the Hermitage. The party will then travel down the Tasman river, across Lake Pukaki and down the Waitaki River. The Waitaki was the old Maori canoe route, and interesting rock drawings are found in caves in the gorge.
