TRADE WITH JAPAN
Garment Makers’
Attitude
(New. Zealand Press Association> TAUPO, August 4.
The attitude of the Textile and Garment Manufacturers’ Federation to trade with Japan is reiterated ip the annual report of the federation.
The federation recommended that the only goods (affecting the textile and garment trades) which should be selected for inclusion in such an agreement should be: Raw materials peculiar to Japan. Raw materials of classes not made in New Zealand to the extent that enlarged imports of these would not cause reaction from any more preferential source. ‘ ‘lt must be kept in mind.” states the report, “that in certain instances woven cotton or rayon piece goods could replace some production of local j knitted piece goods, and that where finished goods are coming into New Zealand made from Japanese materials, New Zealand manufacturers must, in equity, have equal access to such materials.” Consumer goods peculiar to Japanese production. Consumer goods of types not made in New Zealand. “The federation further recommends that all goods importable from Japan pursuant to any such agreement on trade arrangements should be subject to import licensing, and they should be branded with the, country of origin,” the report says. “The federation’s activity in this matter was extremely helpful to the New Zealand Manufacturers’ Federation council, which, at the moment, is involved in consultations with the Government on the subject.”
