MACKINTOSH CALEY

Profit Rises (New Zealand Press Association) DUNEDIN, August 5. Gross Trading profit of Mackintosh Caley Phoenix jumped £24,000 during the past year to £201,000, said the chairman of directors (Sir Leonard Wright) to the annual meeting of the company today. Costs were £lB,OOO more than in 1957. Sales were £lOO,OOO higher than in the previous year, he added, and were easily the highest on record. Introduction of a completely new costing system, had proved most beneficial—unprofitable lines had been cut out. “The public showed ‘buyer resistance’ to being asked to pay 9s for a 11b box of chocolates. The profit ratio had been low as cocoa butter price during the year had fluctuated between £550 and £BOO a ton. The day of the loose biscuit in tins is over. With thts changeover our tin shop is no longer necessary and we have sold it at a satisfactory figure.”
