QUALITY OF BEEF
U.K. Advice To Australia (Rec. 9\p.m.) LONDON, August 5. “The Times” said today that Britain had told Australia in recent talks in London it would be in her interests to ensure beef shipped to Britain was “more closely’’ to the British consumers’ taste. Consumer demand was for “lean meat with little waste,” the newspaper said. “We are accustomed to draw our beef supplies from great distances and. thanks to the process of refrigeration, the imported beef from South America, Australia and New Zealand arrives in good condition.
“The better product is chilled rather than frozen,” said the newspaper. “In this line of business Argentina has long scored over Australia through careful organisation of the cattle trade to provide the quality required and by reason of the shorter ocean haul.
“Competition is keen, and Australia has lately been far from satisfied with the prices that her frozen beef makes on the British market.
“Rightly, we expect to get value for money, and in talks with the Australians this summer we have had to tell them frankly that it will be in their interests as well as ours to make sure that the quality of beef shipped here meets more closely the present taste of British consumers.
“Australia is making a great effort now to develop the chillea trade from her northern ports with fast ships to bring the beef here in first-class order. “The trend of demand cer-
tainly favours the light-weight beast that does not carry too much fat when it is fit for slaughter,” said “The Times.”
