Electra Noise Tests
The take-off noise level of the four turbo-prop engines of the Lockheed Electra, which is Tasman Empire Airways’ replacement for the DC-6, is less than half that of four-engined pistonpowered aircraft of the same size and loading. This was shown in official tests for the Port of .New York Authority, confirming predictions made by Lockheed engineers. Sound readings were taken 1.47 and 2.23 miles from the start of the take-off, with the Electra loaded to 86,5001 b, 87,0001 b and 110,0001 b. Sound engineers found that the Electra was quieter at a point 1.47 miles from the start of the take-off than present luxury four-engined airliners are at a point 2.2 miles away.
