BURNSIDE HIGH SCHOOL
New Two-Storey Design
A new type of two-storey block design is being planned by the Education Department for the Burnside High School. It is being developed by the Nelson Education Board. This information was given to the Christchurch Post-Primary Schools’ Council in a letter in which the department noted the rescission of the recommendation for a girls’ high school in favour of a co-educational school and “concurred” in this decision. The department’s letter referred to the new high school for “Fendalton.” “Who called it Fendalton?” asked Mrs L. J. Broomfield. “Like Topsy, it just growed,” said the chairman (Mr W. J. Cartwright). The school site was in the Fendalton riding of the Waimairi County, said the secretary (Mr P. J. Halligan), so in correspondence the name Fendalton had been used. But there was a move to the district called Burnside. Mr Duncan Mackay said the Waimairi County Council was anxious to perpetuate the name Burnside since the road to the airport had been renamed Memorial avenue. The site was outside the generally-recognised Fendalton area and Burnside seemed an appropriate name. The Christchurch Boys’ High School, “Riccarton,” was also m the Fendalton electorate and riding, said Mrs Broomfield. “Fendalton is now a pretty wide district,” said Mr F. H. Wright. Mr Mackay moved that the new school “be referred to as the Burnside High School.” When this motion was adopted, Mr Cartwright said this did not mean that a change later would be ruled out.
