EDUCATION BOARD ELECTIONS
Woman Candidate Nearly Succeeds
By only four votes, a woman has failed to secure election to the Canterbury Education Board. This feature aroused more interest than any other in results der dared yesterday. Had Mrs M. E. Holland secured a handful more votes, she would have been the first woman elected to the board. Although women have stood in other years, they have usually been defeated by decisive margins. In the Christchurch combined group of wards the three sitting members were returned, in the west ward the sitting member held his seat; but in southern central (Ashburton) the representative will change. The voting was as follows: Christchurch Combined.—Mr A. Greenwood 246, Mrs S. G. Farquhar 227, Mr C. S. Thompson 219 (sitting members elected); Mrs M. E. Holland 215, Mr C. A. Rattray 183, Mrs G. E. Boyd 134. West Ward No. 1 (Greymouth). —Mr R. W. Sansom 77 (sitting member returned), Mr N. Shallcross 65. Southern Central No. I.—Mr E. S. Ayers 66 (elected), Mr C. H. F. Maynard 46 (sitting member defeated).
