WHITEBAIT SEASON

3312 Cwt Caught On West Coast

During the 1957 season, the total quantity of whitebait caught on the West Coast was 3312 cwt. slightly less than in the previous season, according to the annual report of the Marine Department. The best catch w;as recorded by the Wataroa area, including rivers from the Big Wanganui river to the. Mberaki river, where 951 cwt was caught. In the Hokitika area, including all rivers from Arahura river to Mahinapua river,. the catch' totalled 671 cwt.

Good runs wefe experienced on the West Coast in the early part of the season, but in the last few wjeeks adverse river conditions affected the total catch. In other districts the, season generally, except on the Waikato river, was good.
