MAORI URBAN POPULATION
(New Zealand Preu AMoeiation) WELLINGTON, July 18. One of the most striking features of the movement of the Maori population is its growing urbanisation, says the annual report of the Board of Maori Affairs tabled in the House of Representatives today. In 1945. 19.5 per cent, of the Maori population lived in towns; in 1956 this percentage had increased to 27.7. In numbers this means a doubling from 19.000 to 38.000. The urban areas of Wellington and Auckland account for almost half the increase, and Auckland for about one-third. In 1945, one in every 20 Maoris lived in Auckland; in 1956 the figure was one in 12. Apart from Wellington and Auckland, Rotorua has the biggest Maori urban population in New Zealand.
