VACANCIES MALES MEN WANTED for Light Sheet Metal Work, Spreydon District. Apply Works Manager, A. and T. BURTT. LTD. 8017
Random Reminders SOUVENIRS The antimacassar, the aspidistra and the hansom cab are regarded today as being among the most unmistakably Victorian pieces of impedimenta, but if there is anything truly symbolic of the times it is the family photograph. Families in those days were larger than they are today, and' the photographs are as arresting for their quantity as much as their quality. A study of them suggests that for the individual, the family photograph was as much of a trial as a visit to the dentist, for the subjects in them almost invariably wore expressions of tense determination. The central figure was always, of course, the father of the family. He was always seated with geometrical precision in the centre of the group, while lesser creatures, such as his wife, stood behind him with, perhaps, a timid hand resting on his shoulder, to mark her as a person with a little standing. The man of the house looked, in such a group, like a heavyweight champion with a swarm of attendants. But the rest of the group was usually worth studying too. Invariably, some-one was caught off-side, looking the wrong way, or moving. Other expressions were clearly based on respect for the photographer’s diabolical art, and the faces were usually as long as the frocks. But the expressions were certainly no more varied than the items to be found in the classified advertising columns of “The Press,’’ which bring to thousands, day by day, means of saving or making money; a consideration these days.
