WEATHER IN JUNE

Lincoln College Report

Frosts on 27 days, more than twice the usual number for the month, were recorded in June by observers at Canterbury Agricultural College, Lincoln. Sunshine was 43 hours above the station mean and the highest recorded since 1919, according to the monthly report of meteorological observations. The month was remarkably fine, dry and frosty. Although the rainfall was above the . average, 2.21 inches fell on June 24 and 25. A severe hailstorm, about a mile wide, passed over the area, with Lincoln township in the centre, on June 7. At the centre, hail lay to a depth of 2in and more than sin in drifts. Warm, sunny days produced a mean maximum temperature 2.7 degrees above the mean, while the high number of frosts, the most severe of which was 16.4 degrees on June 30, reduced the mean minimum temperature by 3.9 degrees. Cultivation, which was confined to ploughing old grass, was completed without interruption with the ground being rather too dry. New grass and some greenfeed areas made growth during the month and the exceptionally dry conditions for most of the month greatly assisted the feeding of forage crops. Stock health was satisfactory and dairy production was maintained at a high level. Work in home gardens was of a tidying up nature, pruning and digging. Observations made (with last year’s figures in parenthesis) were: mean humidity, 79.5 per cent. (88.0 per cent.); mean maximum temperature. 53.41 degrees (53.3 degrees); highest maximum temperature (June 6), 65.4 degrees (63.8 degrees); mean minimum temperature, 30.3 degrees (32 5 degrees): lowest minimum temperature, 20.0 degrees (22.2 degrees): mean grass minimum 25 degrees (28.8 degrees); lowest grass minimum temperature, 13 9 degrees (19.9 degrees); mean temperature for month, 41.80 degrees (42.9 degrees); mean range of temperature for month, 23.21 degrees (20 8 degrees); mean earth temperature, 41.0 degrees (43.0 degrees)days of frost, 27 (20); rainfall, 2.80 in (1.30 in rainfall to date, 15.81 in (19.28 in hours of sunshine, 154.4 (126.9); mean amount of cloud, in eighths, 4 (6.2); miles of wind, 5056 (4915); mean force of wind, ,1.6 (1.6); evaporation for month, 1.854 (1.245).
