NATIONAL PARKS SUPERVISOR
Mr R. W. Cleland Appointed Mr R. W. Cleland, aged 37. the senior ranger to the Arthur’s Pass National Park Board, has been appointed to the newly-created post of supervisor of national parks. This was announced yesterday by the Commissioner of Crown Lands, Canterbury (Mr T. W. Preston), who said that Mr Cleland would work from Christchurch. Mr Cleland, who joined the board in 1950, comes from Feilding. He had previous experience as a draughtsman and in forestry in New Zealand and overseas. As supervisor of all the Dominion’s national parks, Mr Cleland is required to be a capable mountaineer, to have a knowledge of building construction, plants and animals, and to' be able to promote public interest in the parks by giving lectures illustrated with slides and films. In his new post, Mr Cleland will be an officer of the Lands and Survey Department.
