KARITANE HOSPITAL

Big Increase In Deficit

The Lady King Karitane Hospital completed the year with a deficit of £4547 in its accounts —more than double the figure for the previous year, according to the management and finance committee’s annual report “It has become the custom each year to record an ever-increasing deficit in the accounts of the Karitane Hospital,” says the chairman (Mr J. G. Laurenson) in his report to be presented at the Plunket Society’s annual meeting on July 9. “The year just ended has been no exception. The serious nature of the financial situation should require no emphasis, but in spite of strenuous efforts we are no nearer a decision from the Government on our application for a greater measure of assistance.” The committee has worked to expenditure to a minimum but it is satisfied that there is little that can be done to reduce it further, the report says. Income was a little less buoyant, mainly because of a drop in social security receipts due to a slightly lower bed rate. “A heartening feature has been the increase of 12j per cent, in donations received from patients and the continuing interest shown by branches and sub-branches. Until the Government’s decision is known, little improvement can be expected. The committee would like to place on record its appreciation of Dominion Handquarters’ efforts in this mat|dr.”
