Golf BRITISH OPEN

Fine Round By R. J. Charles (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) LYTHAM (Lancashire), July 2. The New Zealand amateur, R. J. Charles, with a fine first round 71, is five strokes behind the leader, Peter Thomson (Australia) in the British open golf championship ’ Charles is second placed among the amateurs, with only the British amateur champion, Joe Carr (70), ahead of him. Charles had seven birdies in his 71. Thomson, in great form, hit a magnificent 66 to lead the field at the end of the first round. At the end of the day Thomson led Christy O’Connor (Ireland) by one stroke. On the form he has shown over this 6635-yard course, the Australian appears to have a great chance ol winning the title for the fourth time. Thomson was lucky to miss the worst of torrential rain today which virtually washed the holder. Bobby Locke (South Africa) out of the title fight. Locke, hit by a deluge when standing level fours for 12 holes, ran up four successive fives and ended with 76. Thomson, missing the heart of the storm, wedged and putted his way to a great outward half of 32. with seven single putts. Precision golf brought him home in 34, with only one single putt, an eight-footer for a birdie three at the sixteenth. Charles, like Locke, bore the brunt of the heavy rain, but his figures improved during the storm. He had birdies at the third and fourth going out in 37, and at the twelfth, thirteenth, fifteenth, sixteenth and eighteenth on his homeward 34. Charles's card was—Out: 4, 4. 5. 3,3, 4,5, 5, 4—37. In: 5,5, 2, 3. 4. 4. 3. 5, 3—34. Total: 71.
