“Mudplugs”

In an endeavour to provide motor sport on a cheap basis with the minimum of risk, a number of Christchurch trials enthusiasts have begun building “mudplug specials.” Based on the rules of trial clubs in England, the cars are specially built to cover rough and bogey ground. One car which is almost completed has an Austin 7 engine, nine forward gears and four reverse, and has a top speed of 40 miles an hour. As much weight as possible is positioned over the rear wheels for traction, and extra coil springs and rubber blocks are added to the suspension.
