ELECTRA BEGINS TESTS
Replacement Planes For T.E.A.L. “The Press” Special Service WELLINGTON, July 2. The Lockheed Electra, chosen as the replacement type for Tasman Empire Airways’ fleet, has begun official flight tests aimed at certification by August 22. The first tests will be made by Electra No. 1, which has been flying since December 6. The fourth Electra off the production line will perform the rugged function and reliability tests. These will begin this month. Eastern Air Lines, in whose colours an Electra recently spanned the American continent from Burbank, California, to Norfolk, Virginia, in 6 hours 18 minutes at speeds up to 440 miles an hour, will name its first Electra “New York.” The Dutch line K.L.M. will follow its policy of naming after planets and stars: the first will be Mercury. T.E.A.L., which is expected to take delivery of its three Electras from late in 1960, will probably continue to use Maori names.
