WAGE INCREASES FOR PAINTERS
Wage increases have been granted under the terms of a New Zealand Painters’ and Decorators' Award issued by the Court of Arbitration.
The minimum wage for weekly workers has been increased from £lO 5s to £lO 10s a week and rates for hourly workers have been increased from 5s l}d an hour to 5s 3d an hour. Under the new award an employer must, within three months of . engaging a worker, inform him in writing whether he is employed on a weekly or an hourly basis. The new rates of pay are subject to the General Wage Order increases of 18 per cent The sum of 10s a day paid to workers on country work has been increased to 12s 6d. The additional overtime rate for country work has been increased from Is 6d to Is 9d an hour.
Workers working on bosunchair or swinging stages have had their extra amount increased from 2s 4d a day to 2s fid a day. There has been an increase to 3d an hour from 2}d an hour extra for workers engaged on painting roofs with a pitch in excess of one in three. Workers painting the interior of tank waggons, rail tank cars or bulk oil tanks have had their extra payment increased from 7d to 8d an hour.
The new rates of pay have been made retrospective to April 9 while provisions of the award came into force on June 12. The award will remain in force until April 8. 1960.
