First Aid To 96,131 By St. John Ambulance
WELLINGTON, June 20. The St. John Ambulance Association and the St. John Ambulance Brigade handled 96.131 firs* aid cases and 97,992 ambulance cases in New Zealand during 1957. Brigade members, while on duty, gave first aid to 50,250 persons. While off duty, brigade members helped 45,881 persons. The association’s 97 ambulances, representing 57 per cent, of the total ambulance transport service in New Zealand, treated and carried 97,992 cases, and covered 951.090 running miles. Out of 359 drivers, 287 were voluntary. Pupils in 815 classes of instruction were awarded 3262 first aid certificates, 627 home. nursing certificates, 83 home hygiene certificates, 16 air attendants certificates and 11 industrial hygiene certificates.

There were 2640 members in 125 ambulance divisions, 1386 members in 90 nursing divisions. 2251 members in 134 cadet ambulance divisions, and 2019 members in 118 cadet nursing divisions.
A special report giving these figures, which was submitted t > the recerit annual meeting of the priory chapter of the Order of St. says that during 1957 the field officers’ service in isolated timber-milling settlements included 99 lectures and 85 screenings of films on safety and first aid training. Establishment of St. John first aid posts along the main highways is extending throughout the country. The report says there are already 65 of these posts where first aid equipment and supplies can be obtained by motorists.
