Imre Nagy
Sir,—Surely those amongst us who look to Communism as the ultimate civilisation, must now be shocked and horrified at the barbarity of the recent executions of Imre Nagy and his colleagues. P.J.A. in his letter suggests that these executions were carried out as retribution for the lives of many good people murdered by the “fascist elements.” No doubt many good people did die. but it is suggested that perhaps they died in an attempt to establish what they considered to be an improved form of government. P.J.A. also compares, apparently as a diversion, the execution of the Rosenbergs with these recent executions. However, it should be pointed out that the Rosenbergs were found guilty of treason, a crime punishable by death under both forms of government, whereas, Imre Nagy was found guilty of “revisionism” which is not a punishable offence in most democratic communities.—Yours, etc., J.H. June 19, 1958.
Sir.—America has the nerve to come forward with criticism of Nagy’s execution—Nagy, who knew full well what he .was doing against the Hungarian workers and who, if allowed, would have carried on his misdeeds against the people. Mr Eisenhower nqw seems to find Nagy’s execution a convenient excuse to side-step Summit Talks. Why? Nagy was executed in Hungary, not Russia. Also, before any trouble began in Hungary, American leaders never vowed themselves friends of itagy as minister of a Socialist country but now they bringUiim forward as a martyred hero.— Yours, etc., M. GIBSON. June 19. 1958.
