NEW STUD AT TIMARU

Nearco Horse As Sire ' Trovato. an attractively-bred, wellperformed son of Nearco, will take up stud duties next spring at a new thoroughbred stud started at Otipua, near Timaru, by Mr C. H. Shackell. Trovato came to New Zealand from England last year too late for the stud season. Foaled in 1952, Trovato is a chestnut son of the unbeaten Nearco. His record as a four-year-old was one win, five seconds, and one third in seven starts. He won the Covert Side Handicap over two miles at Lingfield Park by three lengths from Blue Legend. His seconds at that age were in the April Stakes (one mile and a half) at Newmarket, the Stretchworth Stakes (one mile and a half) won by Dormello at Newmarket, the Bilbrook Plate (one mile and a half) at Wolverhampton with top weight of 9-0. the Great Yorkshire Handicap Stakes (one mile and threequarters and 132 yards) at Doncaster, and the Florizel Handicap Stakes (iwo miles) at Kempton Park. In his only start as a five-year-old he was second at Hurst Park in the Whitehall Handicap, one mile and I three-quarters and 66 yards. I Trovato’s dam is Bura, by Bahram from Becti, by Salmon Trout from Mirawala, by Phalaris from Miranda, by Gallinule from Admiration, which left the great race mare Pretty Polly winner of 22 races and £37,297. Bura was a winner and has had considerable success as a brood mare. Her first six foals have all won. Pharsalia was unbeaten in four races, including the Queen Mary Stakes and the Lowther Sweepstakes. Verdura won three races, including the Wilbraham Stakes at Newmarket. Gratitude won the New Stakes at Royal Ascot. MiraWala, the third dam of Trovato, was a winner, and her daughter. Stafaralla, achieved fame as a producer by leaving the Aga Khan’s St. Leger winner, Tehran, which, has been champion English sire.
