GIRL GUIDE DISPUTE
Miss Howard Concerned
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON. June 19.
Although the position in the Girl Guide movement was very bad. she could see no way out. said the Minister in charge of the Welfare of Women and Children (Miss Howard) in the House of Representatives this evening. “I have this long title and people write to me; but I have not been able to find out what it means," added Miss Howard. ‘ Minister in charge of the Welfare of Women and Children means everything and it means nothing. For example, people write to me for houses, but 1 can’t get a house from the Minister of Housing to allocate.” Miss Howard said responsible citizens had written to her expressing very deep concern about the movement that had taken place among the Girl Guides in Southland. Guiding in Southland was completely disorganised. Some effort should be made to clear the matter up, but she did not know what she could do. “If we are going to deal with delinquency, the more clubs and the more movements that we have the better. Guiding is the kind of thing which helps to clear up trouble in that age group.” Miss Howard said she believed that anything which could not be settled otherwise, should be brought to Parliament, which was the highest Court in the land and should be able to take it in hand “If there is any way within Parliamentary procedure in which the matter can be cleared up I hope it will be,” she. added.
