MANUFACTURE OF GIN
Rrewery May Re Given Licence
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 18.
Well-informed sources said today that negotiations for the basis of an agreement with private interests to manufacture gin in New Zealand have been completed and that a brewery in Auckland will be the centre of this project. It is understood the first supplies will become available within four to six months.
United Kingdom distilling interests will be responsible for rectifying the base which will be made in Auckland, and experts will be responsible for the final product. Once the New Zealand-made gin is on the market no further imports will be made.
It is also understood that brandy will be made for the local market in New Zealand next year, and when these supplies become available no further import licences will be granted. It is strohgly rumoured in Auckland that the Government will give the gin licence to New Zealand Breweries, in conjunction with Campbell and Ehrenfried, Ltd., who will reequip the Lion Brewery in Newmarket, Auckland, for the project. The brewery is not needed for making beer because New Zealand Breweries has built a new plant. New Zealand Breweries’ shares have risen sharply in price in the past week, but this is mainly attributed to the company’s proposal for a one-for-two bonus issue.
