(Neto Zeaiana Press Association/ GISBORNE. June 8.
The prospects of finding oil in the Rotokautuku area, about three milesj from Ruatoria. appeared to be much brighter and definitely good, said the Minister of Mines (Mr Hackett) after inspecting field operations (here on Friday. No geologist could be expected to say with certainty that oil existed in any quantities, he said but the potential of natural gas being produced in the area was well worth investigating, said the Minister. Gas leaks had been encountered all along the seam where the core drilling at present was being carried out to test the sub-surface strata. Oil slicks were also prominent, and there were encouraging signs that the investigations were well worthwhile. There were particularly good signs of natural gas at an old bore believed to have been made many vears a°o. and tests carried out in the locality suggested that large quantities of the gas were available. . The Minister of Works (Mr Watt) accompanied Mr Hackett.
