RE-EQUIPMENT OF T.E.A.L.
Report On Meeting With Minister Discussion on the meeting last week with the Minister in-charge of Civil Aviation (Mr Mathison) was deferred to be taken in committee by the council of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce this week. The chairman of the chamber’s air vigilance committee (Mr E. Millton) had reported in open meeting on the meeting with the Minister over the re-equipment of Tasman Empire Airways, Ltd and it was agreed that any discussion on this subject should be taken later in committee. Certain questions were put to the Minister and some of the answers could only be repeated in committee. The substance of the discussions was that the Minister would do his very best to protect T.E.A.L., which view coincided with the committee’s thoughts on the matter. “The general tenor of the meeting was that we should get right behind T.E.A.L. now that a decision has been made at Govern ment level, and urge that New Zealand’s bargaining poweis should be used to the best advan tage of T.E.A.L.,” Mr Millton said It was felt that New Zealand should not be by-passed by the main international trunk routes, but action to rectify this should not be to the detriment of T.E.A.L., therefore, the chambers publicity should be directed to creating a demand which would have to be satisfied by the airline operators.
