FARM SAFETY COURSE

Comprehensive Lecture List

Thirty-two voluntary farm safety officers from Young Farmers’ Clubs from Kaitaia to south Otago and Westland and six field officers of the National Safety Association will attend the second farm safety course which will be held at Canterbury Agricultural College, Lincoln, next week. The course held at the college last year was the first of its kind in New Zealand. Next week’s course will follow closely the pattern of last year’s course, but some new subjects have been included on the programme. For instance, Mr Godfrey Bowen, chief shearing instructor to the New Zealand Wool Board, will lecture on safety in the woolshed and and Mr R. D. Hassed, group manager, Nobel Group, Imperial Chemical Industries, Wellington, will give a paper on explosives.

The course will be officially opened next Monday morning by Mr lan Matheson, chairman of the National Safety Association. Lectures will follow on accident psychology by Mr G. A. Shouk-| smith, safety with animals by Dr. J. W. McLean, safety in the woolshed by Mr Bowen, the problem of farm safety by Mr C. J. Crosbie, and in the evening, safety with firearms by Mr H. B. Barker. On the second day Mr Crosbie will devote some time to tractor safety, Mr Hassed will lecture on explosives, Mr L. R. Osmond on farm fires and Mr D. L. King on forces affecting tractor stability. There will be a fire-fighting demonstration after Mr Osmond’s address and in the evening there will be a film programme. Field Demonstrations The whole of the afternoon of next Wednesday will be devoted to farm safety field demonstrations. In the morning of that day there will be lectures on shafts and belts by Mr D. Jensen, infection on the farm by Dr. McLean and farm poisons by Mr A. R. Odinot. On Thursday first aid on the farm will be discussed by Dr. W. I. Paterson, road safety by Mr E. S. Henderson, safety with implements and vehicles by Mr C. J. Crosbie, child safety by Mr G. V. Williams and extension methods by Professor L. W. McCaskill. In the evening there will be a discussion on the future of farm safety. Electricity, by Messrs E. B. Chisnall and A. G. Mathews, resuscitation from drowning and electric shock by Mrs Piper, and farm safety overseas by Messrs A. W. Riddolls and G, G. Lindsay, will be the subjects of papers on Friday and a further lecture by Professor McCaskill on extension methods will conclude the programme.

At the end of the course the majority of the farm safety officers in the Young Farmers’ Club movement will have, attended a week’s course on the subject. Two of the men who were at last year’s course will be at Lincoln again next week.

The course is being held by the National Safety Association in conjunction with the New Zealand Federation of Young Farmers’ Clubs.
