MELBOURNE, June 4. Competition was keen at the Melbourne wool sales yesterday, with Japan and the Continent leading in the buying.
Prices remained firm at yesterday’s levels, with some irregularity experienced °in faulty skirtings and short, prematurely shorn wools, which sold at lower rates. There was a 95 per cent, clearance of the 13,100 bales offered.
Crossbred prices:—good to super, 60’s, 76d per lb; good, 56’s, 65d; good to super. 50’s. 66d.
Newcastle Sale Firm There was practically a total clearance of the 12,990 bales offered at Newcastle yesterday. The competition was dominated by Japanese buyers and was well supported by the Continent and Britain.
The market was similar to Brisbane’s closing on May 29, and was fully firm with all descriptions and with a particularly keen demand for strong quality Merino fleece. Comebacks and crossbreds were approximately 10 per cent, of the catalogue.
