Refusal By Owner
"The Press'’ Special Service DUNEDIN, June 4. The Dimedin owner-trainer, Mr C. H. Wallis, has refused a substantial offer for Formal, star steeplechaser at the Dunedin Jockey Club’s meeting. Mr Wallis said that a North Island sportsman made inquiries after his success in the Otago Steeples, but he had declined to enter into negotiations as he is now keen to enter the horse for the Grand National Steeplechase at Riccarton in August. The Southland apprentice, D. M. Te Au, will again be on Formal in the Dunedin Steeplechase on Saturday. No rider has yet been engaged for Cassius. J. M. Cappie, who was associated with him in both his successes at the meeting, is at present in hospital in Invercargill. He was injured in a motorcar accident. Changes of Ownership Shadrach, winner of the Trial Stakes on the opening day of the Dunedin Jockey Club’s winter meeting, was sold by his breeder, Mr R. E. Scorgie, to Messrs W. G. Crossan and V. F. Druitt before the race. The Kurdistan four-year-old will remain in the Orari stable of T. W. Reilly. Mr Druitt has the hurdler. Native King, in the same stable. Vamoose, which won his way out of maiden class at the recent Southland meeting, was sold by Mr T. L Maslin after the first day of the Dunedin Jockey Club’s meeting to Messrs W. L. Aynsley and D. H. Robertson. Vamoose finished second to Distant Day in the seven furlong Southern Handicap on Monday. H. A. Anderton said this morning that Prince Ermine was a doubtful starter on Saturday. The Beaumaris gelding finished third to Brookfields Lad and Steadfast on the opening day of the meeting and is one of the form runners in the Aidworth Handicap on Saturday.
