PARTICIPATION OF UNIVERSITY
Vice-Chancellor’s Comment
“It is pleasing to see that New Zealand is to give her scientists—both in Government departments and in the University—the opportunity to take their place in this rapidly-developing field,” said the Vice-chancellor of the University of New Zealand <Dr. G. A Currie) in Christchurch last evening, commenting, on the plans tor a nuclear science institute. “There is no question of the relevancy of nuclear science not only to pure physics and chemistry but also to industry, agriculture, and health,” Dr. Currie said. “The nuclear science institute will be a focus for the development of all phases of research and for the exchange of ideas with overseas countries. “It is gratifying that the Minister has made it so clear that the university will not only have a share in the administration of the institute but that its scientific members will have full opportunitv to work in it." Dr. Currie said details of university participation in the project were still under discussion with the Government; but there was wide interest in all the constituent universities. Canterbury Proposals In Christchurch yesterday, the University Grants Committee <of which Dr. Currie is chairman) heard representations for the development of nuclear science teaching in the University of Canterbury. The scheme envisages the extension of post-graduate work, already planned in the mechanical and chemical engineer ing departments in association with the departments of physics and chemistry; the appointment of full-time staff: and the eventual establishment of a masters degree in nuclear engineering The faculty submitted a proposal for post-graduate experience overseas: but some of this may now be possible in the New Zea-
