BOY BOUND TO RAILS

Father Narrowly Saves Son (Rec. 9.30 p.m.)

NORWALK (California), June 4. Seconds before a train thundered by, seven-year-old Michael Evans was snatched by his father from the line where he had been trussed and left to die by two older boys, police said yesterday. They said the father, Mr Frank Evans, told them that his son and two friends—Robin Denton, and his brother, Calvin Denton, aged five, were playing near the line on Monday when two youths leaped from ' the brush and threatened to beat the younger boys. Calvin Denton began to cry, so the youths let him and Robin go. but warned them not to tell anyone that Michael was being held.

They bound Michael to the line, but he managed to wriggle free. He was beaten and thoroughly tied down again, and the older boys left him.

The Denton boys ran to Mr Evans and told him his son was bound to the line.

Mr Evans said he ran all the way to the line. He saw one of the youths fleeing and captured him, but let him go when he heard the roar of the approaching train.

Mr Evans said he snatched his son off the line just as the engine roared by. Neither of the youths has been captured.
