WOOL BOUGHT BY COMMISSION

Re-offer For Sale Assured

Wool which was bought by the New Zealand Wool Commission, and which would normally be scoured in the Dominion. will not now be shipped overseas but will be held here and re-offered for sale. This assurance has been obtained from the Acting-Minister of Agriculture (Mr Boord), in reply to representations by the Canterbury Freezing Works and Related Trades Union The union was concerned that the wool—of which more than 30.000 bales was reported to have been bought during the South Island sales—would be shipped overseas in the grease or stored. This, they said, could lead to considerable retrenchment and unemployment in the Dominion’s wool-scouring industry. In reply, the Minister said, in a letter to the Canterbury secretary (Mr T. Handisides): “I am informed that the commission has decided to hold in New Zealand the wool it has purchased that might be suitable for scouring, with a view to re-offering these wools at New Zealand sales. “Buyers can then, if they wish have some of these scoured in the preparation of their scoured blends. “Quantity Not Large” “The quantity, however, is not large, and amounts to about 5000 bales. In the commission’s opinion it was the trend of the market since Christmas, and before the commission’s purchases were made, which has resulted in less wool being scoured than in the past.” said Mr Boord. “Nevertheless, the commission has undertaken to keep in mind the representations which have been made by your union and the Woolscourers’ Association in deciding its policy on the wool it has bought. “It has already decided to include the 5000 bales in the quantity to be held for sale in New Zealand. Scouring by the commission, it considers, is only likely to be justified when necessary to avoid deterioration of the wool while it is stored.” ONE DAY SALE Be early to scoop up the bargains at our sale on Friday.
