COST OF LOCAL GOVERNMENT
Extra Money By Wages Tax (New Zeatana Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 29. The Municipal Association of New Zealand supported the view that the costs of local government should be distributed more evenly, the secretary of the association (Mr C. L. Bishop) told the Royal Commission on Local Authority Finance in Wellington today. Mr Bishop said £8 million for local body projects could be obtained by a tax of 2d in the £ on all salaries, wages and other forms of income. The association believed an increase in the petrol tax of not less than 3d a gallon to provide an additional £3 million was also merited, he said. Other measures for relieving the rated burden were bigger subsidies for streetworks from the National Roads Board Fund, subsidies for libraries from the Government education grant, and Government grants of £500,000 for parks and reserves. Payment of street lighting costs by electrical supply authorities and a tax relief of £250,000 for public utility services were also advocated. Mr Bishop said the association strongly opposed the suggestion that when there was an increase in national income, rates should increase proportionately.
