Lawn Tennis European Zone Of Davis Cup
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, April 28. India today completed a 5-0 victory over Monaco in the first round of the European Zone of the Davis Cup by winning the last two singles at Monte Carlo. India will meet Italy in the second round. Other first-round European Zone results included: Chile beat Turkey at Istanbul 4-1, and will now play France. Finland gained a 3-0 lead over Luxemburg and will now meet Mexico, which nad a first-round bye. Britain’s Davis Cup opponents next month will be Brazil, which qualified for the European Zone second round tie by beating Hungary, 3-2, at Budapest The winners of the Brazil-Britain tie, to be played in Britain before May 20, will meet either West Germany or Belgium in the third round.
Postponed Final Won By Default '
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, April 29. The postponed final of the North Island lawn tennis championship has been awarded, by default to J. E. Robson and Mrs Robson. The finalists were the Robsons and L. A. Gerard and Miss R. Morrison. The postponement, first at Lower Hutt and then at Auckland, was due to the illness of Miss Morrison. Both Miss Morrison and Gerard are now overseas and the management committee decided last night to award the title to the Robsons.
New Zealanders’ Success In Britain
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, April 29. Advice has been received from England that the New Zealand tennis players, P. G. Nicholls and L. A. Gerrard, won the recent Sutton tournament doubles championship event, the second tournament in which Gerrard has taken part on this tour. Nicholls and Miss S. Cox reached the final of the mixed doubles.
